Launching Phase I

How is project scope determined?  Where do you start?  What are the typical objectives?

Virtually all of The Lab's projects analyze one or more organizations or businesses. Within these groups, The Lab analyzes operations wall to wall, typically documenting at least 80%, or more, of the work activities and business processes. The scopes of our projects are diverse. The Lab has frequently conducted projects encompassing an entire enterprise or business line across multiple countries. Other projects have been focused on a single department and location.

A project typically address multiple improvement objectives simultaneously. Examples include:
  • Cost reduction
  • Revenue productivity

  • Service improvement
  • Operating flexibility

  • Marketing effectiveness
  • and more

Typical Improvement Objectives, Scope Options

What is the typical project size?

Two thirds of The Lab's projects address one or more organizational groups with a combined total headcount that falls between the range of 100 to 2,000 employees.
The smallest projects have addressed as few as 50 employees, the largest have included more than 10,000. These projects can address a single organization
(e.g., the finance department) or other clients mix and match multiple, diverse organizations (e.g. field sales, order fulfillment or human resources) to take advantage of analytical economies of scale and lower their cost of improvement.

How does The Lab charge for its services?

The Lab's fees are based on the sum of our labor, travel and document production costs. Because our work plans are standardized, we can accurately predict and manage our costs. Consequently, our fees are quoted on a lump sum, fixed price basis. In North America, these figures include travel costs. There are no additional charges for clients to estimate or manage.

What information does The Lab need to prepare a proposal? How long does it take?

Our standardized tools and work plans enable The Lab to generate accurate proposals quickly with a minimum amount of information form prospective clients. Once we know the basic characteristics of the organization: size, location, work activity, we can deliver a proposal in one or two days.

How much time is required in Phase I from the client organization?

The Lab needs access more than time from clients. Typical meetings with our clients last less than an hour. Most interactions are brief conversations and informal reviews that last approximately 15 minutes. Virtually all participation from clients is on a part-time basis, particularly for projects covering less than 1,000 employees.
